About University of Minnesota Minneapolis, Minnesota:
The University of Minnesota Minneseapolis - Home of the Golden Gophers. The U of M campus is surrounded by the fine communities of Cedar-Riverside, Prospect Park, Dinkytown, Marcy-Holmes, Como, and Nicollet Island/East Bank.
Cedar-Riverside
The Cedar-Riverside neighborhood is named after the intersection of the two main avenues of the neighborhood, Cedar and Riverside. The neighborhood is triangular-shaped with three definitive boundaries: the Mississippi River on the east side, Interstate 94 on the south side, and Interstate 35W on the west side. Cedar-Riverside`s history is nearly as old as Minneapolis'. In the late 1890s, the neighborhood was known as "Snoose Boulevard," with a thriving community of Scandinavian immigrants, many of whom worked in the milling and lumber industries on the Mississippi River. In the 1960s and 1970s, Snoose Boulevard turned from a quaint neighborhood to a beehive of hippies, intellectuals, actors, artists and musicians. Presently, the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood boasts the largest community of immigrants in the Twin Cities, continuing a long history of ethnic and cultural diversity.
Prospect Park
Prospect Park is located in east central Minneapolis. The neighborhood borders the City of Saint Paul on the eastern side and the University of Minnesota to the west. It is bound on the south by the Mississippi River and on the north by the railroad tracks and the SE industrial area. The neighborhood was platted as the Prospect Park subdivision in 1885 by developer Louis Menage. In the late 19th century, Prospect Park was a Minneapolis suburb connected to the city by a streetcar line. The neighborhood's steep hills, curving streets, and the Witch's Hat water tower all give it a strong sense of place. Nearby shopping, recreation, and frequent community events add to the urban-village community feel of Prospect Park.
Marcy-Holmes
Marcy-Holmes neighborhood, on the east bank of the Mississippi River, is named for William L. Marcy, an American statesman and secretary of state born in 1786 and Oliver Wendell Holmes, an American poet, essayist and novelist born in 1819. The neighborhood lies across the Mississippi River from downtown. The University of Minnesota forms its east boundary, and the west border of the neighborhood is the East Hennepin/Central Avenue commercial area. In 1993 the City Council approved a change in boundaries. Two blocks that were previously within the University of Minnesota neighborhood were reassigned to Marcy-Holmes. These two blocks, bound by University Avenue SE, 11th Avenue SE, Second Street SE and I-35 W, include Florence Court, a historic landmark of nine brick townhouses, which had 47 households in 1990.
Dinkytown
University is home to the University of Minnesota and its adjacent commercial district, Dinkytown. Located at the north edge of campus, Dinkytown is between SE, 8th St. and University Ave and stretches from 10th Ave. to 17th Ave. SE. Marcy-Holmes is home to Dinkytown, which includes many businesses tailored to the nearby University of Minnesota. The neighborhood also provides housing to many students attending the University of Minnesota.
Nicollet Island/East Bank
The Nicollet Island/East Bank neighborhood comprises Nicollet Island on the Mississippi River just east of downtown and the portion of the eastern riverbank located between Central and Second avenues. The neighborhood is at the geographical and historical center of Minneapolis. The island is named for Jean Nicollet, a French explorer, translator and negotiator who was the first European to travel through the Great Lakes area. Hennepin Avenue East and First Avenue Northeast are two of the main roads that connect the island to the rest of Minneapolis. The island spans 47 acres, and most of the old stone houses still existing were built toward the end of the 19th century. The island is part of the St. Anthony Falls Heritage Zone.
Como
The Como neighborhood (also called Southeast Como) is named after Como Avenue, which runs through the neighborhood. Como Avenue took its name from Lake Como in northern Italy, a popular tourist destination. Como neighborhood is in the University community, about one mile north of the Dinkytown commercial area and the east bank campus of the University of Minnesota. Its boundaries are the city limit to the east (33rd Avenue SE), the Southeast Industrial Area to the south of Elm Street, Interstate 35W and the Burlington Northern main line to the west, and East Hennepin Avenue and Winter Street NE to the north. The housing stock consists of modest early 20th-century bungalows and Victorian and 1920s-era homes with a scattering of newer duplexes and single-family homes. Many of the larger homes have been converted into student housing. Como has an elementary school, three churches, a mosque, Van Cleve Park and small retail stores.
