Untitled Page
Calhoun-Isle contains the fine communities of Bryn Mawr, C.A.R.A.G., Cedar-Isles-Dean, East Calhoun (ECCO), East Isles, Kenwood, Lowry Hill, Lowry Hill East, West Calhoun, and Linden Hills.
Bryn Mawr
Located west of downtown and on Minneapolis' western edge, Bryn Mawr neighborhood parkland: Theodore Wirth Park to the north and west, Bassett Creek to the north, Bryn Mawr Meadows to the east and Cedar Lake Park in the south. Interstate 394 bisects Bryn Mawr and is the major entrance to the neighborhood. The neighborhood was named after one of the area's elementary schools and the neighborhood's community park. Bryn Mawr in Welsh means "big hill," and some of the early investors in the neighborhood were from Bryn Mawr in Pennsylvania. Residents in this neighborhood tend to be professionals or executives, many of whom work out of their homes.
C.A.R.A.G.
The Calhoun Area Residents Action Group, commonly known by the acronym "CARAG," is bounded by Lake Street and 36th Street to the north and south and Hennepin Avenue and Lyndale Avenue to the west and east. The neighborhood is in the heart of Uptown and is in walking distance of Lake Calhoun. CARAG is well established with three-fourths of its homes built before 1920. The neighborhood is also home to a strong mix of service and retail businesses, as well as four churches and a synagogue.
Cedar-Isles-Dean
Cedar-Isles-Dean neighborhood is located on the western edge of Minneapolis in the Calhoun-Isles community. It takes its name from Cedar Lake, Lake of the Isles, and Dean Parkway, which was named in honor of A. J. Dean, one of its donors in 1892.
Its main boundaries are Lake Street to the south, France Avenue to the west, and the Kenilworth Lagoon and Lake of the Isles to the north and east. The neighborhood shares Cedar Lake with Bryn Mawr and Kenwood neighborhoods, and Lake of the Isles with Kenwood neighborhood. Cedar Lake, Lake of the Isles and Lake Calhoun are the major lakes in the Chain of Lakes, and they have many amenities including a significant amount of parkland and many miles of trails. Midtown Greenway runs through the neighborhood.
East Calhoun (ECCO)
East Calhoun is located in Minneapolis' Calhoun-Isle community and is part of the Uptown area. The neighborhood is bordered by Lake Street on the north and 36th Street on the south. Calhoun Parkway is the western extent of East Calhoun, which runs to Hennepin Avenue to the east. Lake Calhoun, one of Minneapolis' most popular attractions, is at the neighborhood's western border. A wide variety of amenities are located in and around East Calhoun including shops, restaurants, night clubs, movie theaters, coffee shops and grocery stores. The housing mix includes apartment buildings, duplexes and single-family homes that were built mostly around the turn of the 20th century.
East Isles
East Isles neighborhood is located on the east side of Lake of the Isles, in the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes area. The neighborhood extends from 22nd Street East on the north to Lake Street East on the south and from Hennepin Avenue on the east to the lake shores on the west and Knox Avenue South on the southwest. The neighborhood's name reflects the small isles in the lake. Lake of the Isles with Lake Calhoun is one of the most popular recreational destinations in Minneapolis. The Midtown Greenway, a converted railroad line featuring bike and walking paths, runs through the southern part of the neighborhood and connects it with Hiawatha Avenue on the east and the city limits on the west.
Kenwood
It is likely that Kenwood got its name from the company that developed the 95-acre subdivision that became the neighborhood. The developer chose a convenient location to attract discriminating residents. Located on Minneapolis' west side, the neighborhood's boundaries are defined by Cedar Lake Park on the west and north, Kenwood Parkway on the north, West Lake of the Isles on the east, and Kenilworth Place and Lake of the Isles to the south. Kenwood shares Lake of the Isles and Cedar Lake with Cedar-Isles-Dean neighborhood. The neighborhood contains many open spaces including these two lakes, trails, parks and playgrounds. Cedar Lake Trail parallels the Burlington Northern tracks on the north. Kenilworth Trail runs from north to south and is part of the Chain of Lakes byway. The Kenwood trail ends at the Grand Rounds trail that partly follows the shores of Lake of the Isles. Kenwood's parks attract skaters in winter, and walkers and joggers use the nearly three miles of trails around Lake of the Isles year-round.
Lowry Hill
The Lowry Hill neighborhood is located west of Downtown, enclosed by Interstate 394 on the north, Interstate 94/Hennepin Avenue on the east, 22nd Street on the south and Lake of the Isles Parkway, Logan Avenue and Morgan Avenue on the west. Lowry Hill is named for Thomas Lowry, one of the original residents and developers of the area. The neighborhood hosts the Walker Art Center and Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.
Lowry Hill East
Lowry Hill East is named after Thomas Lowry, one of Minneapolis' original residents and developers. The neighborhood is in the Calhoun-Isles community and is bounded by Lake Street on the south, Hennepin Avenue on the west, Lyndale Avenue on the east, and the conjunction of Hennepin and Lyndale on the north. Because of its roughly triangular shape, Lowry Hill East is sometimes called "the Wedge." Lowry Hill East began its life as a community in the 1880s with the arrival of Thomas Lowry's public transportation system, the horse-drawn streetcar line. Lowry Hill East has a diversity of housing ranging from elegant turn-of-the-century residences to large, modern apartment buildings. Many of the larger homes have become converted to multiple-unit housing. Amenities in and near the neighborhood include proximity to downtown and a variety of shops, restaurants, food markets, service businesses and nearby cultural attractions.
West Calhoun
West Calhoun is located on the western edge of Minneapolis in the Calhoun-Isles community. The neighborhood is bounded by France Avenue, Lake Street, Lake Calhoun and 36th Street. Lake Calhoun has gone through several name changes. Some Dakota people called the lake "Mde Ma-ka-ska," which means "Lake of the White Earth." This was because of the lake's sandy north shore. Later, early Europeans renamed the lake with another Dakota name, "Medoza," or loon. The current name comes from early surveyors who mapped the western lands in 1817. They named it after the secretary of war at the time, John C. Calhoun. Calhoun was also a congressman, senator, secretary of state and vice president. The Grand Rounds Scenic Byway borders Lake Calhoun, and the oldest country club in Minneapolis, the Minikahda Club, occupies most of the western and southern sections of the neighborhood.
Linden Hills
Linden Hills is located in southwest Minneapolis. It's bound on the north by 36th Street West and Lake Calhoun, on the east by William Berry Drive and Lake Harriet, on the south by 47th Street West, and on the west by France Avenue, which is the city limit. The neighborhood, named by the developer for the linden trees and rolling terrain, was developed in the 1880s to entice homebuyers to leave downtown for cottages on Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet. Most of the original cottages have been replaced by large bungalows and Tudors. The Lake Harriet-Como Streetcar ("Trolley") line runs through the neighborhood. Built at the end of the 19th century to connect downtown Minneapolis with the lakes, the historic rail line now only operates between Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun.
